Nick is quick to laugh and full of stories. As a child, he gardened with his family and as an adult maintained home gardens prior to his incarceration. Nick became involved in the Lettuce Grow program through his assigned role in the prison system. As the assistant to the prison Social Worker, he helped his fellow inmates to better understand the learning materials provided through the Lettuce Grow Program. Nick believes that the garden program helps to alleviate the constant vibe of anger and fear that is so often felt in the prison, as well as provide sense of hope and future opportunity for the inmates. Nick was also greatly impacted by the compassion an enthusiasm shown by the volunteers. He now serves on the Board of Directors for Growing Gardens and remains involved in developing the Lettuce Grow program. - Miriam Portney, Mark Ellsworth, Annie Wood |
