Isabel's first thought was "grow up a happy family"
Isabel’s idea of a better life was to leave behind Mexico, the drugs and gangs of LA, and head north with her husband and family of four boys to Portland. Once here, her priority was too make sure her boys got a good education, and become "good" citizens. She became involved with Growing Gardens and it has changed her and her family’s life. Being a city lady, in the beginning, all she knew was that she “understood the seed, the plants and the passion to grow”. By becoming involved with Growing Gardens, she has succeeded in providing her family, neighbors and friends access to fresh, healthy, organic, produce. By becoming a mentor, she has given back to her community and friends by sharing her knowledge. She loves the interaction of teaching and learning, so others can reap the rewards and benefits of growing their own food too. Growing up in Mexico, her mother grew a plant called huazontle. It’s a grain, and she knew with that food source they would never go hungry. It was so hard for her to track it down here in Portland but she did, and now she wants to share with everyone. Isabel remembers the founder of Growing Gardens with very fond memories. He taught her so much and she is grateful for that. |
